Kids Brazilian JiuJitsu Instructor
Coach Juan Sanchez
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I get inspiration from all different walks of life. But one phrase that puts it all together is “all those who came before me”. I get inspired by stories of other service members who did amazing things during the service and risked their life for others. I get inspired by stories of paratroopers jumping into battle knowing the risks that come with the job. I get inspired by those men who risk job security to open their own business and grind it out for their family knowing that if they don’t succeed. Ordinary people doing extra ordinary things is who inspires me.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?
God, Family, and BJJ. I’m passionate about being a good steward of the blessings God has provided to me. A great family and many opportunities to learn new things and be able to share it with others. I know that everyone in my life and every opportunity I have ever been given is by His will and I am always passionate about making sure I never waste those gifts.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST BEGIN STUDYING JIU-JITSU?
I first started in 2023 after having my third child. I was always interested in martial arts and took karate when I was younger and dabbled a little in boxing. Jiu-Jitsu though was always on my radar, but I never had anywhere close to learn it. I checked it out when I was first stationed at FT Sill back in 2016, but when I inquired about it (it was at Dreadnought as well), I got notified I would be deploying and didn’t get a chance to join. I kind of kept putting it off due to deployments and moving, but when I got notified I would be coming back to FT Sill, I knew this was my chance. I don’t even think I completed the week trial before I was hooked and signed up.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS BEING A COACH AT DBJJ?
Definitely just talking to the kids. I love to hear their stories about their trips, their birthdays, and day at school. Just sitting there and hearing how excited they are to tell me their stories is one of my favorite’s moments. Another of my favorite moments is also sitting and talking to the coaches and the owners. Seeing all the behind-the-scenes moments to be a successful coach and business owner ranks up there. It is free guidance and wisdom from those who have walked the path I hope to one day get to.
